Romeo & Mercutio a friendship that was misconstrued as unrequited love on Mercutio's side by Tybalt
Romeo & Mercutio
Tybalt: "You shall find me apt enough to that, sir, an you will give me occasion."
Mercutio: "Could you not take some occasion without giving?"
Romeo and
Mercutio have a sweet lifelong friendship, Mercutio always seems to be looking
out for Romeo in a protective, loving sometimes-erratic manner. Romeo sometimes
has to reassure Mercutio as he can fly off the handle at the smallest things.
However Mercutio's sweet nature and naivety is soon taken advantage of by
Tybalt when he wants to start a confrontation with Mercutio merely because he
embarrassed him. Unfortunately the usual casual somewhat violent brawls leads
to Mercutio's murder this time as Mercutio does not take to kindly to Tybalt's
tone nor what he is referencing. Mercutio is one to entertain others but only
when he is in on the joke hence his performance at the Capulet's party. Where
he dressed in full drag and lip synched to 'Young Hearts' everyone seems
to enjoy the performance even Tybalt until he realises that if Mercutio has attended
the party then so has Romeo, when he spots him his temper flares. His uncle
soon resorts to slapping him as he does not want his nephew making a scene at
his party in front of his guests. Mercutio jumps in to defend Romeo
from the relentless beating he was receiving from Tybalt and upon doing so
beats Tybalt to a bloody pulp until Romeo begs him to stop, within in that
split second of being distracted by Romeo he gets fatally wounded. Romeo had
been refraining from retaliating as he has just married Tybalt's cousin Juliet
and he sees him as his newfound family.
Tybalt: "Mercutio, thou consort'st with Romeo,—"
Mercutio: "Consort! what, dost thou make us minstrels? an thou make minstrels of us, look to hear nothing but discords: here's my fiddlestick; here's that shall make you dance. 'Zounds, consort!"
