Pretty Little Liars Book Series Vs Pretty Little Liars TV Series

“Only two can keep a secret if one of them is dead.”

The Pretty Little Liars book series are an immense read, whereas in the TV show the viewing audience has been in suspense about who A is for the past 7 seasons, with the book you're in the know from the first book. The books series and TV show have relatively the same premise however they are completely different in every other sense, even down to something as simple as each of the main liars appearance. However their personalities, traits and characters are the exact same.

Spencer is still driven, academically gifted and competitive as hell particularly when it comes to her older sister Melissa and her found step-sister Amelia. She has a few more hardships in the books though.

Hanna is somewhat insecure as she used to be a big girl and she doesn't always have the love and
support that she would like from her Father as he appears to prefer her step-sister Kate, she's loving and somewhat naive, however we soon find out also incredibly intelligent.

Aria is artistic, unique in her dress sense and longing to be in an artistic field after leaving high school/college. Rather than her father's affair with Meredith just ruining her parents marriage as it does on the TV show in the book it also brings Meredith and Aria's Father even closer with life altering decisions.

Emily is a jock, highly competitive (when it comes to swimming), determined, fiercely protective of
her friends the only difference between the two is that Emily conveyed in the book is a closeted bisexual whilst Emily in the TV show is an out and proud lesbian, however she has a hard time coming out in both the TV show and the book series especially to her family that's why A takes great pleasure in outing her. As well as in the book series she has a sibling where as in the TV show she is an only child.

The beauty of the two being from the same but being so different is that you are never able to 100% say well this happened in the book so it'll definitely happen in the TV show. However whether they all know it or not they are all pawns in A's twisted game of life. When looking at how each of the girls flourished into the women they are now it's because different circumstances lead them down each path. Spencer constantly bickering and trying to one up her older sister lead her to be incredibly conscientious of her and her friends surroundings. Aria having an independent upbringing taught her that in times of worry/stress she is able to cope with it and reassure her three other friends as well as her younger brother Mike at times. Hanna's initial self doubt lead her to become rather independent and secretly intelligent as she didn't want her Mother to stress (being that she is currently in a single parent family) nor her friends when situations got terrifying. Emily went from being a timid and shy girl to the strongest of the group after being forced out of the closet she learnt that in order to feel comfortable with herself and others she had to accept herself. In doing so she has risked her life saving the girls on numerous occasions in A's ridiculous games.

Now with Alison the primary conclusion the viewing audience has of her is some of power, control, manipulation, bully tactics and beauty. This is implied both in the books and TV show, however in the book we only ever see the manipulative side of Alison so that she can get what she wants whereas in the TV show we get to a softer more sympathetic side of Alison as well as finding out why she became a compulsive liar.

Romeo & Mercutio a friendship that was misconstrued as unrequited love on Mercutio's side by Tybalt

Romeo & Mercutio

Tybalt: "You shall find me apt enough to that, sir, an you will give me occasion."
Mercutio: "Could you not take some occasion without giving?"

Romeo and Mercutio have a sweet lifelong friendship, Mercutio always seems to be looking out for Romeo in a protective, loving sometimes-erratic manner. Romeo sometimes has to reassure Mercutio as he can fly off the handle at the smallest things. However Mercutio's sweet nature and naivety is soon taken advantage of by Tybalt when he wants to start a confrontation with Mercutio merely because he embarrassed him. Unfortunately the usual casual somewhat violent brawls leads to Mercutio's murder this time as Mercutio does not take to kindly to Tybalt's tone nor what he is referencing. Mercutio is one to entertain others but only when he is in on the joke hence his performance at the Capulet's party. Where he dressed in full drag and lip
synched to 'Young Hearts' everyone seems to enjoy the performance even Tybalt until he realises that if Mercutio has attended the party then so has Romeo, when he spots him his temper flares. His uncle soon resorts to slapping him as he does not want his nephew making a scene at his party in front of his guests. Mercutio jumps in to defend Romeo from the relentless beating he was receiving from Tybalt and upon doing so beats Tybalt to a bloody pulp until Romeo begs him to stop, within in that split second of being distracted by Romeo he gets fatally wounded. Romeo had been refraining from retaliating as he has just married Tybalt's cousin Juliet and he sees him as his newfound family.

Tybalt: "Mercutio, thou consort'st with Romeo,—"
Mercutio: "Consort! what, dost thou make us minstrels? an thou make minstrels of us, look to hear nothing but discords: here's my fiddlestick; here's that shall make you dance. 'Zounds, consort!"

TomBoy

Lisa: [subtitled version] "Are you looking for the others? I noticed you looking at them. They already left. Are you new around here?"
Laure: "Yeah, we got in yesterday."
Lisa: "I'm Lisa. I live here."
[pause]
Lisa: "You're shy."
Laure: "No, I'm not."
Lisa: "Won't you tell me your name?"
Laure: "Mikael, my name is Mikael."

Yet another movie about being brave enough to be yourself however this one has a large amount of deception. Laure or better known as Mikael and his family are new to town, he appears to be a closeted transgender boy as when he first meets Lisa and she asks for his name without hesitation he says Mikael. He appears to have a comfortable and loving family, his Mother, Father and little sister. Being somewhat shy when he initially moves there he doesn't automatically interact with the children who live in and around his complex. The next day when he gets downstairs only Lisa is there who ends up striking a conversation with him, Mikael is totally oblivious to it but Lisa has a crush on him.
Mikael's appearance further instills the image of a young boy as he has cropped hair which he gets his little sister to help maintain with her child-safe scissors, wears clothes stereotypical of a little boy, his stance and personality only further confirms it. Since none of the children have reached puberty yet Mikael is also about to remove his t-shirt during a soccer game to further blend in. He is very particular with details, he cuts his swimming costume into speedo trunks and rolls a piece of play-dough into a male anatomy part to put into his trunks. His secret is almost discovered one day when  he
wanders off to pee in private and obviously has to crouch down however when he stands back up to pull up his shorts and underwear he isn't sure whether or not he has been found out. His true identity is only discovered after he and another little boy get into a fight, when the mother of the other child comes to confront Mikael's Mother, initially Mikael's Mother goes along with the charade however she soon changes her mind citing that she is doing it for his benefit. She then goes to the child who Mikael fought earlier house to clarify/clear up a few things, specifically Laure/Mikael's true identity. This just leaves Laure or better know as Mikael to be distraught and withdrawn and not wanting to go outside anymore now that everyone knows the truth. He eventually goes outside but he must now suffer the repercussions of his lies at the hands of his friends.

Rayan: [subtitled version]
[to Laure]
Rayan: "We hear you're a girl. We're gonna check that."
Lisa: "Stop it! What do you think you're doing?"
Rayan: "We're gonna check if she's really a girl."
Lisa: "Leave him alone."
Rayan: "You're right. It's YOU who'll check."
Lisa: "No, I won't."
Rayan: "If she's a girl, then you kissed her. It's disgusting. Right?"
Lisa: "Yes, it's disgusting."
Rayan: "Then, you're gonna do it."
[Lisa pulls down Laure's pants]

Ma Vie En Rose

Ludovic Fabre: "I'm a girlboy."
Jérôme: "A girlboy?"
Ludovic "Fabre: To make a baby, parents play tic-tac-toe. When one wins, God sends Xs and Ys. XX for a girl, and XY for a boy. But my X for a girl fell in the trash, and I got a Y instead. See? A scientific error! But God will fix it and send me an X and make me a girl and then we'll get married, okay?"
Jérôme: "That will depend on what kind of girl you are."

This is a story about being brave enough to be yourself from a young age no matter the challenges and difficulties you may come across from both supposedly friends and family. Ludovic is a little boy who often dresses up as a girl, puts on make up, has long hair and always tells his Mother and Grandmother Elisabeth that he is a girl and that he intends on marrying Jerome once he is a girl. He doesn't seem to understand why no-one else seems to understand, as far as he is concerned it is a mistake that God will rectify in due time. Ludovic is like every average little boy in that he likes to play games, sports, dance except for one thing he isn't a little boy, he's a trans gender girl who just happens to know this from a very young age and is more than willing to embrace it even if other around him are uncomfortable and even aggressive about it. Ludovic and his family move to a new town as his father gets a new job, on arrival they throw a barbecue for both their new neighbors and Ludovic's father colleagues. As Ludovic's father is introducing his family members one by one he describes Ludovic as a comedian as he is currently dressed in women's clothes when he comes out of the house. The family quickly assure everyone that he was just messing around as he's quickly rushed back inside where his mother changes him into his own clothes. However when they discuss it with Elisabeth the actions of Ludovic at the party she defends it, as she read that it is perfectly normal for children seven and under to dress up.
Jérôme: "And this is our bathroom, and this is my bedroom."
 Ludovic Fabre: "What's in there?"
Jérôme: "It's out-of-bounds."
Ludovic Fabre: "But what's in there?
Jérôme: "My sister's bedroom."
Ludovic Fabre: "Where is she?"

Jérôme: "She's gone away."

Ludovic and his father's bosses son Jerome are the same age and soon Ludovic is invited for a play date at Jerome's house. Jerome is intrigued by Ludovic, whilst Ludovic always insists that he intends to marry Jerome when he is a boy.  Somewhere in the midst of the two boys game Ludovic finds himself in Jerome's deceased sisters room (Jerome's parent's seemed to have preserved the room as it was not wanting to disturb anything in there), where he dresses himself up in one of her old dresses and the two play Pam and Ben getting married, Ludovic playing the role of Pam whilst Jerome is Ben. This is perfectly fine as young children tend to play pretend however Ludovic takes it one step further in insisting that he is a girl, especially since he lives in a rather narrow-minded community where no-one wants their child/children to associate with him.
Ludovic soon starts to lose his supportive/protective support system the fiasco during the school play where he impersonated the little girl who was meant to be Snow White but was soon revealed when Jerome stepped on the veil purposely. After all these events  it's the final nail in the coffin for Ludovic's Mother. When Ludovic comes out declaring that his stomach pains are in fact period pains he has chosen the wrong time as his older brothers have just brought to their Mother's attention that someone has sprayed "Bent boys out" on their garage
door. In a fit of rage/utter anguish she cuts Ludovic's hair. Resulting in the two of them crying. Ludovic's Mother through frustration and Ludovic as he doesn't understand why his hair is being cut nor why he is being forced to act and behave in a way that is alien to him.

Ludovic Fabre: One day I'll marry Jerome!
Hanna Fabre: I told you, boys never marry boys! Or very rarely.
Ludovic Fabre: But I'll be a girl.
Hanna Fabre: You are a boy and you always will be!

GirlTrash

GirlTrash is a comical musical about the events that occur for on a long night out in the LGBT sub-culture of Los Angeles, we predominantly follow gay best friends Daisy and Tyler. The two are rock musicians who are on their way to a competition however as fate will have it their van breaks down. Daisy's younger  recent college graduate sister Colby (who is apart of a fraternity who isn't aware that she is gay.) agrees to come pick them up as long as they will help her to talk to her crush. Daisy contemplates helping Colby until she tells her that her crush is a girl who goes by the name of Misty. Misty is a gay struggling actress who's best friend Sid who is bisexual and is hoping to hook up with a famous celebrity so as to further her career. Daisy feels like Colby is just copying her since she herself is a lesbian whereas Tyler thinks she shouldn't be so hasty to judge her sister.

Tyler Murphy: [to Colby] "So I hear you're gay now?"
Daisy Robson: "She's not gay."
Colby Robson: "Why can't I be gay?"
Daisy Robson: "Because I'm gay you're just copying me."

During the movie we encounter various of Daisy and Tyler's friends as well as Daisy's ex girlfriend Xan who's new girlfriend just happens to be competing in the same competition. Daisy, Tyler and Colby soon realise that Misty is not interested in Colby at all but instead Tyler. Misty seems totally oblivious to Colby's feelings for her, she even talks about Tyler to Misty and Sid. This however does not deter Colby she just thinks of ways in which to make Misty jealous and want her instead. This plan would have been successful had Daisy not caught her sister Colby and Tyler in a compromising position and instead Misty had.

Colby Robson: "Do you know how to have fake sex?" Lauren: "I do not understand the question."

Throughout the extent of one night everything bad that could possibly happen to these girls does,
however it just makes them that much more determined to succeed. After all the trials and tribulations of the night thankfully Misty and Daisy win the competition, Colby hooks up with Misty and Monique the gangster who has recently been let out of prison on parole settles her score with Tyler and Daisy.

Drool

Imogene Cochran: "So, um, was that your husband leaving the house this morning?"
Anora Fleece: "Uh, yeah. He works at a rubber factory outside of Tulsa."
Imogene Cochran: "Rubber. As in condoms?"
Anora Fleece: "Oh, uh, no. They make inner tubes, pool linings, that kind of thing."
Imogene Cochran: "Made of rubber."
Anora Fleece: "Oh, yeah."
Imogene Cochran: "Huh. Interesting, I guess."
Anora Fleece: "Not really."
Imogene Cochran: "Nah, I was just being polite."
Anora Fleece: "Uh, what does your husband do?"
Imogene Cochran: "He don't do nothing, he dead."
Anora Fleece: "Oh. Must be nice."

Drool is a rather bizarre but comical movie, in the beginning scene alone the viewing audience is subjected to seeing Anora fantasising about her husband Chebb being a groomed, affectionate and pleasant man to be around instead of the grumpy, racist, unkempt, selfish man she ended up with. Anora often lives in her own fantasy land to get over her drab, menial, repetitive routine of each day. She has two children who she seems to leave to their own devices as they are both old enough between right and wrong. She has teenage Tabby who is incredibly artistic and just wants to fit in at school, who has a crush on Denny who she ends up briefly dating before her untrustworthy friend encourages her to break up with him for her benefit. She also has Pete aka Little Pete who is a somewhat confused adolescent boy, he wants to be like his father but he doesn't really share the same thoughts, interests and values as his dad besides his blatantly prefers his older sister. Chebb rules the house with an iron fist resorting to violence if he feels he needs to. He does as he likes when he likes even being intimate with his wife is when he feels like it whether she's actually enjoying it or not, it doesn't seem to bother him that she is often fantasising about her dream man as she does it, nor that his children may be able to hear him as he's not exactly quiet.

Tabby Fleece: [voice over] "God, I can't believe I was one of those girls who fell for that "I had a dream about you" crap. But then again, I had a real thing for boys like Denny. Those dreamy eyes made my heart race around the block. And in my hometown of Catoosa, Oklahoma, sometimes that's all you had to look forward to - your favourite boy telling you he had a dream about you, if you know what I mean. Anyway, as most people already know, your hometown isn't always where your heart is. It's just where your parents got stuck. So it's where you get stuck until something sets you loose upon the world. The world. I didn't know anything about the world back then."

Anora's life changes for the better and gets more interesting when Imogene moves in next door and befriends her. Imogene sells Kathy Kay Cosmetics and often gives Anora free samples or will do the face mask, pedicures/manicures or make regimes with her. This initially seems fine and Anora seems to come out of her timid shell until Little Pete decides to tell his father about his Mother's new found friendship and that Imogene was in the house. This fuels Chebb to kick off as Imogene is African American and he neither wants her in his house nor for his wife to be socialising with her all due to her not being Caucasian. The two continue to be friends initially with Anora just going to Imogene's house instead but they soon venture back to Anora's house. This would be fine except Chebb catches them not only in his house but in his and Anora's room kissing no less. This is when the trouble begins, Chebb slaps her across the face and goes to beat up Imogene when Anora shoots he repeatedly. Which both shocks and frees her from his domestic abuse and to live the life she would like to lead, just one issue what are they gonna do with Chebb's body.
With Little Pete, Tabby and Imogene in tow the four of them embark on a journey to bury Chebb somewhere safe and fitting for him. The feeling of contempt and utter disgust that Tabby once had for Imogene rapidly disappears as she realises that she isn't all that bad if she just gives her a chance. Little Pete soon warms to Imogene too, especially when she lets him use some of her samples on the doll that he accumulated when they stopped off at a deserted park. They soon find refuge at Imogene's friends humble abode, where the two sibling decide to put there now deceased Father Chebb in make-up before burying him.

Tabby Fleece: [voice over, writing in diary] "Dear Gully. Forget everything I said about Mama and Imogene. Please look over them and all of us. Oh, and take care of Daddy, 'cause without him, we never would have been set loose and ended up here. Amen."
