Cut Out-Sound Assignment

Sound Within 'Cut Out'

With my major project initially I had no intention of using any non-diegetic sounds. But after re-evalutating my step outline I decided that I could add in a few to make it seem somewhat more realistic. For instance with the very first step Carmen and a non-diegetic sound can easily be heard in the background for she could be singing along with something on the television or talking to the television i.e. laughing at it, arguing with what someone on screen said or warning a character on screen as in 'Don't say that/Don't do that/Don't go in there.' Which could create the idea of Grace coming home to not one person but numerous people as the viewing audience could believe the television to be a person. I also thought that during Step 7 to Step 12 (the beginning as it is a transition fade from the flashback to the present time, if done correctly it could be a replica to that of the beginning sequence of 'Beaches' starring Bette Midler, where you can see Bette Midler in her present state as adult CeCe Bloom but as the music cuts in the viewing audience is able to identify that the music is too old fashioned and the picture us fading to that of one that the music would have been composed and recorded in. Also I didn't think I took into consideration the noises you would hear in the office as in the sound of a printer/photocopier/fax machine, telephones ringing the sound of faint talking. There is also the floor surfaces to take into consideration. For instance the flat that Carmen and Grace are inhabiting for the the film has wooden floors so depending on what types of shoes the characters will be wearing will have an effect on the sound that it creates as they walk through the flat. With the few sound tests I've done, slippers can make a shuffling sound, shoes with a medium/large heels makes a clippety cloppety sound and trainers/flat shoes hardly make a sound depending on the material they are made out of. The first time I recorded within this flat I merely used a handheld camera which had a high quality for the image but the sound was quite poor as I was forced to used the built in microphone within the camera, which meant it only picked up select sounds. So the second time I did a sound test I used the boom mic which recorded a perfect high quality sound.
The imagery that I intend to use in my major project is a two bedroom flat in Leyton. I have to place a few objects in different places with in the lounge to make it look more homely for two females and I have to put up a few posters within the lounge to make more emphasis on Grace's career and Carmen's passion for art.

Skins the Novel

Is relatively the same as the series that comes on television. The novel takes us through what the group of teenagers get up to over the summer holidays. The novel however has a lot less drug taking than the series, through watching the series the viewing audience often witness the characters popping pills, snorting cocaine, eating magic mushrooms etc. Whereas with the book you merely read about them smoking weed and getting drunk.
The book turned out to be beneficial when it came to Naomi Campbell and Emily Fitch's relationship. The two girls who finally got together in the end of series 3 of the television series and are no out and proud flaunting their new found love with one another to the detriment of Emily's family who are finding it increasingly difficult to except her new found sexuality and girlfriend. From the Love ball episode of 'Skins' the audience witnessed Katie's disgust in Emily and Naomi's relationship and merely because she did not understand it and thought that she would lose her sister in the long run. Katie even went to the lengths of sabotaging the two's relationship by telling Naomi that Emily had slept with JJ knowing full well that it had occurred before the two had begun going out. But with every lie the truth eventually comes out and Emily and Katie end up fighting but they eventually resolve it with Emily making it known to her twin sister that she loves them both and that just because she likes girl but loves a certain girl Naomi does not change her in anyway. This relationship is similar to that of the one I have created in my major project because just like these two characters who are not initially accepted by their family because they are gay neither are my two characters. Also because neither of the girls are stereotypically 'butch' or 'a lipstick lesbian', the two merely have a unique fashion sense and their clothing does not define who is the domineering one in the relationship neither does the way either of them carries themselves because in their own light the pair of them are domineering within the relationship.

"I love you,’ I said, at the same time as Naomi. ‘I love you so much.’"

Guess Who

"You know, if Theresa had told me you guys were black it really could have saved us an awkward situation."

'Guess Who'
is a film based around the idea of meeting ones in-laws. However this film has a twist by making it so that the Jones family is not aware that the Simon Green that Theresa Jones is bringing home is white and unknown to her recently unemployed having quit his job because his boss was implying that having a black fiance could interfere with his career with in that organisation.
The film presents the audience with many laughs but when you get down to it you can see that all that Theresa really needs is someone support, for someone other than her and Simon to think that it is okay for them to be together.
The film was helpful when it came to doing my project because I wanted to find a way to discriminate against one of my characters indirectly without it being blatantly obvious and the way in which Simon's boss does it was a way in which I could try and base mine on, in a way replicate the underhanded way he presented the idea/notion to Simon as well as the way in which Simon reacted to this shocking news.

Howard Jones: "You didn't tell me he was white!"
Percy: "Yes, I did, back at the retirement home."
Howard Jones: "I thought you was kidding."

Cut Out Step Outline

'Cut Out' stands for the two women being in cut out of society because they fell in love with someone of the same sex.

Int - Flat

Step 1
Establishing Shot - Hallway of Grace and Carmen's flat.
Grace has just come home from work.

Step 2
Establishing Shot - Flat Lounge
Carmen greets Grace.
(Similar to that of the establishing shot used to show the open plan apartment of Theresa and Simon in the film 'Guess Who'. Similar if not the same camera angles/movements. However not the same greeting as it would be too exaggerated.)

Step 3 - Flat Lounge
Carmen asks Grace about her day.

Step 4 - Flat Lounge
Grace informs Carmen about the promotion.
Before departing from the lounge and entering the kitchen, with Carmen following close behind.

Step 5 - Flat Kitchen
Carmen congratulates Grace, hugs her, gives her a peck on the cheek,
"Wine, Champagne whatever you want tonight baby." Carmen.
Grace gets a class of water before going back to the lounge with Carmen following close behind.

Step 6 - Flat Lounge
Grace staring off into space.

Step 7 - Flashback, Int.- Flat Hallway, Establishing Shot.
Carmen and Grace walk in together hand in hand.
(Similar to that of Bette and Tina in 'The L Word' Season 6, as they walk through The New Art Gallery hand in hand.)

Int.- Flat Lounge

Step 8- Grace's boss' Flat.
Grace greets her colleagues and introduces her partner Carmen .

Step 9 - Grace introduces Carmen to her boss.
The boss seems nice and polite but there is an edge to his politeness.

Step 10 -Boss calls over another member of staff after Grace and Carmen have walked off.
"Did you know Grace was gay?" Boss.
(Same reaction to Zainab finding out her son Syed is gay in 'Eastenders', utter revulsion and disgust. Zainab makes him conform to being heterosexual as she sees it as something he can get over it.)

Int. Grace and Carmen's Lounge

Step 11 - Back to present, Grace seems to smile at Carmen before staring in space yet again.

"You can not do those sort of things in this day and age. It's the equivalent to being racist." Carmen.
"When you own the company you can do whatever you like." Grace

"This is not how I visualised today going, it was meant to be a normal day. No arguments, no stress no nothing. I intended to make you my life partner, wife. So will you stop arguing with me and answer me this? Will you marry me?" Grace.
