Emily: "I’m not who you think I am."When we first meet Emily she is an average teenage girl, she's a jock on the swim team, she has a good group of friends (who have been through some really rough hardships such as their best friend/leader of the group Ali going missing and then presumed dead.) with a boyfriend Ben she seemed to adore and two loving and supportive parents.

together than she was meant to initially go to with Ben (we see the aftermath of the fight he and Toby had in the girl's locker), Maya and Emily stick close by one another well when Emily's friends aren't whisking her off her private chats about A. After a while Emily gets fed up and decides she and Maya should check out the photo booth. In the privacy and seclusion of the photo booth the two girls share their fist kiss. Which they both appear to enjoy and wanted to do but Emily soon starts to feel apprehensive when the printed photos are nowhere to be seen. This isn't an issue for Maya as she is comfortable with and has accepted her sexuality as bisexual, Emily on the other hand isn't ready to accept that she may like girls as well as guys or that she may just like girls or that it is just Maya that she likes. Emily starts to feel incredibly nervous/uncomfortable as she's aware that someone has seen the pictures of her and Maya kissing. It's not the kiss that bothers her but what does the kiss mean exactly.
Maya: "I care about you, so I'll wait. You don't need to say anything. You just need to know that."

However with Emily still hiding from her true self it takes some time before she confesses to Maya her true feelings. The two hang out more and Emily soon asks Maya out on a date to the movies where they do everything but watch the movie. The two start dating after this date much to the displeasure of Emily's parents her mother in particular. Emily's Mother just isn't really able to accept that her only child is gay, she doesn't seem to take into consideration how hard it was for Emily to come out to her parents. Pam just sees it as Maya has made her child gay/come out as supposedly gay. The relationship soon comes to an end when Maya is sent away to a religious camp called 'True North' as she is caught with marijuana by none other than Pam. Which initially creates even more tension between Emily and her Mother but they soon resolve things.
